Centrifugal Pump Suction Problems: Is the Pump Being Starved?

A centrifugal pump cannot perform properly if liquid cannot reach it properly.
That sounds obvious.
Yet centrifugal pump suction problems are easy to mistake for pump failure because the symptoms appear at the pump.
Low flow.
Low pressure.
Noise.
Vibration.
Loss of prime.
Before assuming internal components have failed, look upstream.
Hydraulic Institute's ANSI/HI 9.6.6 standard specifically addresses pump piping and the effects that inlet and outlet piping can have on rotodynamic pump performance.
What Causes Centrifugal Pump Suction Problems?
The suction side needs to deliver a stable, adequately pressurized flow of liquid to the pump.
Several conditions can interfere with that.
Restricted Strainers
Strainers catch debris before it reaches the pump.
That is useful until the strainer itself becomes the restriction.
As debris accumulates, the pressure available at the pump inlet may decrease.
A pump can continue running while receiving less liquid than it needs.
If performance declined gradually, inspect the inlet and strainers.
Air Leaks
A suction-side leak can behave differently from a discharge leak.
Instead of water leaking outward, air may be drawn inward.
That air can disrupt pump performance.
Xylem centrifugal-pump documentation includes suction piping air leaks among conditions to check when troubleshooting pump performance.
Check flanges, gaskets, fittings and connections.
Partially Closed Valves
Confirm valve position.
A valve may have been moved during service and never fully reopened.
A partially closed suction valve can restrict the flow available to the pump and increase suction losses.
Do not compensate for a restriction by simply increasing pump speed.
Too Much Suction-Side Resistance
Pipe diameter, length, fittings and bends all contribute to system losses.
The suction line should not be treated as an afterthought.
Hydraulic Institute notes that piping configuration and friction losses affect the system in which the pump operates.
If piping has been modified, ask whether those changes altered pump inlet conditions.
Poor Inlet Conditions
Liquid entering the pump should be as uniform and stable as the system design requires.
Poor inlet geometry, inadequate submergence or disturbances near the suction inlet can introduce problems.
This becomes particularly important when pump flow increases.
Conditions that seemed acceptable at lower flow may become inadequate at peak demand.
Why Suction Problems Can Look Like Pump Failure
Imagine the pump is capable of moving 100 units of water.
But the system can only deliver 70 units to its inlet under current conditions.
Replacing that pump with another pump does not remove the restriction.
The new pump is connected to the same system.
This is why troubleshooting should include inlet conditions before a pump is condemned.
Watch for Cavitation
Insufficient pressure at the pump inlet can contribute to cavitation when liquid pressure drops below vapour pressure.
That can create noise, vibration, reduced performance and internal damage over time. Hydraulic Institute's current NPSH guidance emphasizes maintaining appropriate margin to protect performance and reliability.
Cavitation is not something to solve by simply ignoring the noise.
Find out why the inlet conditions are inadequate.
Has Anything Changed?
When centrifugal pump suction problems appear unexpectedly, ask what changed recently.
Was the piping modified?
Was a valve replaced?
Was a strainer added?
Did the water level drop?
Was pump speed increased?
Did system demand change?
A history of the system can sometimes narrow down the problem faster than disassembling the pump.
Let the Pump Receive What It Needs
Good pump performance begins before liquid reaches the impeller.
Suction piping, valves, strainers, available pressure and inlet conditions all matter.
If a centrifugal pump is producing lower flow or pressure than expected, investigate the suction side before assuming the pump itself needs replacement.
